About the academy…
I began writing music at the age of 9, inspired by my grandmother, who played piano and accordion. Now, with over 20 years of experience in the music industry, I’ve come to realise that while there are plenty of formal education options, what’s often missing is the one-on-one mentoring and coaching that can make all the difference. The music industry is ever-changing, often fickle, and can sometimes feel quite overwhelming or lonely. Looking back, I wish I’d had a mentor during some of the more challenging parts of my journey.
Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of training with incredible teachers who shaped who I am today. I’ve learned from leading vocal coach Georgia Train, and studied piano under concert pianists Maggie Anderson, Robert Ortledge, and Helen Burford. Most recently I explored heavy metal vocal ‘scream’ techniques with world-renowned teacher Mary Zimmer. These experiences have been pivotal in refining my skills.
Over the years, I built my profile with my orchestral rock band Birdeatsbaby, which is now signed to a major metal label under the new name Crimson Veil. I’m also deeply involved in other high-level projects, including Hana Piranha, Third Bloom, HVIRESS, and The Velveteen Orkestra, as well as my solo project, Mishkin Fitzgerald & The Chemical Perils, a folk-country-klezmer act.
I currently reside in Brighton with my partner, Garry Mitchell, who also teaches at our academy, offering lessons in guitar, bass, piano, and production. In my daily life I teach, write, perform and also work at Not Saints - the UK’s only record label devoted to artists in recovery from addiction.
While writing and performing remain my true passions, nothing excites me more than empowering others to do the same, and succeed in their own careers. My focus is on helping artists at every stage of their journey take the next step. I believe strongly in building a community of musicians who support each other because our strength lies in collaboration and mutual growth.
If you're interested in working with me as a mentor, I'd love to hear from you. In the meantime, feel free to check out my reviews on the testimonial page from previous students and clients.
